Welcome to the FOJ Events and Information Page

The following events are being planned by the Friends of the Jordan Education Committee.  “TBA” means that dates are not yet set.  Watch for further information in local newspaper, mailings and on this website.  Most activities will be at the Jordan River Watershed Center (JRWC) 101 Union St.  East Jordan.

APRIL

  • April 19, 2008  Saturday 9 AM - Noon: Jordan River Nature Preserve Clean-Up The Friends of the Jordan will recognize Earth Day by joining the Little Traverse Conservancy staff and volunteers for a morning clean up at the Jordan River Nature Preserve, located along the river just a short distance outside of East Jordan off Fair Rd at M-32. Bring your gloves, tools and work boots and join in the efforts to clean up this new preserve.

MAY

  • May 3, 2008  Saturday  9 AM - Noon: River and Highway Cleanup  FOJ participates in the Adopt-a-Highway Program working on 2 miles of M-66. We also clean up the Jordan River Access Sites.  Meet at Graves Crossing off M-66. Bring work gloves and dress for the weather. We will meet at the Watershed Center for a cookout afterward.
     

  • May 6, 2008  Tuesday  6 PM-9 PM.   Work-Bee at the Jordan River Watershed Center.  Winter is gone and it is time for some spring cleaning to get the Center spiffed up and presentable for the events and meetings that are being planned. You bring your, rakes, brooms, dust rags and willingness to put in a few hours helping us clean the decks, trails and interior and we’ll buy the Pizza.
     

  • May 10, 2008  Saturday  10:00 AM, Nature Hike, Spring Returns to the Jordan  Meet at the Pinney Bridge parking lot. Bring your field guides, cameras and join us to see what is happening as Spring returns to the Jordan.
     

  • May 17, 2008  Saturday  8:00 AM Bird Walk  Join our local “Bird Man”  Jerry Aydlott to identify the songbirds and shore birds who are returning to the Jordan. Bring your binoculars and field guides. Meet at the Jordan River Watershed Center (JRWC).
     

  • May 17, 2008  Saturday 10:00 AM, Stream Monitoring  With trained team leaders, you will gather samples from the river to be tested to assess the health of the river. Meet at the Watershed Center. Come for the Bird walk then stay a bit longer to help with the Stream Sampling.
     

  • May 20, 2008  Tuesday Evening  6:30 PM  All About Eagles  Glen McCune and Joel Evans (not confirmed yet) will talk about the life cycle of the American Bald Eagle, how it has begun to thrive in Northern Michigan and the Jordan Valley. Joel will share information on the success of his project to build nesting platforms throughout Northern Lower Michigan,  one of which is being successfully used by a pair of eagles right in the mouth of the Jordan.  Use our telescope to view the nesting eagles at the Watershed Center.  We should be able to see babies by this time!  Meet at the Jordan River Watershed Center (JRWC).
