Friends of the Jordan Announce Photography Contest Winners

Saturday, Sept 17, was a gorgeous, sunny afternoon for the annual the Friends of the Jordan Celebration. The event is an opportunity to showcase the beauty of the Jordan Valley with an exhibit of photography entered in the 7th annual photography contest. The theme for 2011 was “The Jordan, For All Creatures Great and Small,” focusing on a message of the importance of biodiversity. There were 115 photographs entered from 37 photographers. The Grand prize of $250 sponsored by Charlevoix State Bank was awarded to Alan Leese of Charlevoix for his photo “Swan Sunrise” which will grace the cover of the 2012 calendar. 14 students competed for the Youth Award with the prize of $100 going to Logan Fuller of Boyne City, This prize is sponsored by the East Jordan Iron Works.3 other students had photographs chosen to be included in the calendar and win $50 each. The President’s Choice Award, also $100 sponsored by East Jordan Plastics is chosen by Dr. John Richter, president of the FOJ choosing that which best reflected the theme. The award once again went to Dustin Miller of East Jordan for an intriguing picture showing a fish underwater. The public voted for the Viewer’s Choice Award voting online and this year selected a photograph by Dave Christiansen of Charlevoix of the Eagle’s Nest at the mouth of the Jordan with 2 thriving young eagles being watched over by an adult. This prize was sponsored by Bay Winds Federal Credit Union. 10 additional photographs were awarded $50 and make up the remaining photographs that are included in the calendar. The winners include Heather Outman, Trista Karlskin, Paige Podscalny, Darcie Dietrich-Buell all of East Jordan, Preston Cole of Mancelona, Bill Dietrich, Miranda Stieglitz, Cora Taylor and Anne Zukowski of Charlevoix and Preston Cole of Mancelona. The contest was judged by Jerry Aydlott from Sacred Sparks Gallery of East Jordan. As an accomplished birder and nature photographer he brought his talents to this formidable task. Visitors to the exhibited were treated to refreshments catered by Chef Joseph Krumholz of the Jordan Inn and were entertained by Daniel Donovan Farrow of Boyne City. All photographs are on exhibit at the Jordan River Watershed Center for the next month and will be available for viewing by request by contacting us at foj@friendsofthejordan.org.
