Celebration 2007

Saturday September 15, 2007

Nature photography, great food, cool sunshine and hot blues music made for a winning combination as the community helped the Friends of the Jordan celebrate the natural beauty of the Jordan River Watershed. The highlight of the afternoon was the photography exhibit featuring almost 100 photographs entered in the FOJ’s annual photography contest. The Grand Prize sponsored by Charlevoix State Bank was presented to Mike Schlitt of Charlevoix for his spring photo of the Jordan titled “Smooth as Silk.” The Viewer’s Choice Award sponsored by Bay Winds Federal Credit Union was won by Marybeth Wakulat of Gaylord, for “ A Curious Encounter by the Fish Hatchery.” The Youth Award sponsored by the East Jordan Iron Works  was presented to Elizabeth Chipman of Boyne City. The President’s Choice Award sponsored by East Jordan Plastics, chosen by John Richter president of the FOJ, went to Mary Jane Ulrich of Petoskey for her serene photograph titled “Peace.” Additional awards for the remaining photos that make up the calendar were sponsored by Alden Lumber, BC Pizza, Central Lake Pharmacy, John and Phyllis Dedoes, John Kempton DDS, Greg Klinker DDS, Jordan Valley Animal Hospital, Jordan Valley Graphics, Stark Realty, Floyd and Nancy Wright.

Visitors to the Jordan River Watershed Center were entertained by a blues combo of Steve Little, Roger Lilac, and Jim Clark. Harvest themed refreshments were provided by Allison MacKay of Allison’s Bakery. FOJ President John Richter thanked the sponsors for their generosity in support of the Friends of the Jordan and the photographers for contributing to the appreciation of this vital resource.

The photographs will remain on display at the Watershed Center through October. Groups interested in viewing the exhibit may contact by e-mail at photocontest@friendsofthejordan.org. Additional exhibit hours will be listed in the events section of the local newspapers. Calendars and notecards are available for purchase at exhibits, at the Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, from FOJ Board members and from this website Shop FOJ.
